1. How does a course from an Illinois public community college transfer to NIU?
The Articulation Handbook lists the courses from the community college and NIU course equivalencies.
2. How will a course transfer from an out-of-state school or a school that is not listed in the Articulation Handbook?
We suggest you apply for admission and have official transcripts sent to NIU and an official evaluation will be sent with your acceptance letter.
Additionally, you can complete a transferability form in the Graduation/Evaluation office in Registration and Records, Room 214, or call (815) 753-0681. An evaluation will be processed and mailed to you. This process takes approximately one week.
3. Do I need approval to take a course at another college and transfer it to NIU?
It depends. If you are a senior (90 hours or more), you will need a Senior Transfer Credit Approval form from your major college sent to the Evaluations office in Registration and Records. If you will be concurrently enrolled at NIU and another school, you may need concurrent approval from your major college. If you have reached the maximum number of transferable credits from a two-year school, you will need approval to trade previously granted hours in order to add any new work. Please see your advisor for assistance.
4. What is concurrent enrollment, and do I need concurrent enrollment approval?
Concurrent enrollment is when you are enrolled at another institution during the same term that you are enrolled at NIU. If you are enrolled in more than two courses at NIU during the fall and spring terms, you will need approval to enroll at another institution to transfer that coursework to NIU. If you are enrolled in more than one course at NIU during the summer term, you will need approval to enroll at another institution to transfer that course work to NIU. You must apply for concurrent enrollment approval at your major college office. Students with no major and no college affiliation would apply for concurrent enrollment through the Academic Advising Center.
5. What is IAI?
The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a statewide agreement that allows the transfer of the completed Illinois transferable General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) between participating institutions. If you successfully complete the GECC at any participating college or university in Illinois, upon transfer to NIU, your NIU general education requirements will be met. In addition, there are other courses that may be IAI approved courses that will apply to selected majors at NIU. See the NIU Undergraduate Catalog for additional information or seek information from your academic advisor.
6. What if my transfer work is not showing on my Degree Progress report?
Make sure that your official transcript was sent to NIU. Perhaps the required forms were not submitted, e.g., Senior Transfer Credit Approval (if over 90 earned hours) or concurrent enrollment approval. Perhaps you have reached the maximum number of transferable hours from a two-year school. Notify the Evaluations staff at Registration and Records (815) 753- 8214 or complete a “Degree Progress Report Problem Form” in the Office of Registration and Records. They will then review your file and take appropriate action.
