Meet the Staff

Dr. Julie Schaid

Dr. Julie Schaid began serving as the Director of the Academic Advising Center July 1, 2008.  Prior to joining NIU, Dr. Schaid worked for the Governor of Ohio, serving as the state’s first P-16 Executive Director.  In that role, she coordinated several of the Ohio’s Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives and was responsible for state-level support of Ohio’s high school dual enrollment programs.

Dr. Schaid brings 20+ years of experience in higher education. She has presented on various education-related topics at the state and national levels and has co-authored articles on kindergarten readiness and school district strategic planning.


Daniel J. Turner

Before joining the AAC staff in May 2005, Dan worked in the NIU Orientation Office for 8 years professionally. He has been involved in teaching University Experience (UNIV 101) since 1994 and has taught FIGS, honors, and sections of UNIV specifically designed for undecided students. Dan serves as an advisor for the NIU chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society and is the National President-Elect for the organization. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Loyola University Chicago.


Steven Barleen

Prior to joining the AAC staff in January 2005, Steven worked in both admissions and academic advising at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn . He also served in the Army and Army National Guard and has taught English as a second language in Japan . He currently teaches UNIV 101 each fall.


Jonathon Ferguson

Jonathon joined the AAC staff in August 2008, after working as an academic advisor at North Central College in Naperville, IL. Jonathon has experience in serveral offices at NIU including Orientation & First Year Experience, the Women's Resource Center, and the Academic Advising Center, in which he served as a graduate assistant from 2005 to 2007l.

Colette joined the AAC staff in June 2007 after serving as a counselor in the CHANCE Program for over 7 years. She enjoys teaching UNIV 101 each fall. Prior to coming to Northern Illinois University, she has worked as a youth therapist for both a community mental health agency and a residential facility.

Beverly joined the Academic Advising Center in June 2007 after serving as a counselor in the CHANCE Program for over 7 years. She taught UNIV 101 for seven years. Prior to coming to NIU, she worked as a Health Educator for DeKalb County Health Department.

Mazen Nagi

Mazen joined the AAC staff in June 2008. He brings to the AAC his previous work experience as an academic advisor and instructor within NIU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Political Science Department. Mazen has extensive teaching experience having taught courses at Benedictine University, North Central College, Rockford College, Columbia College and Rima College in Malaysia. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Political Science at NIU and teaching a course at Columbia College.


Michelle Pickett

Michelle joined the AAC staff in June 2007. She has worked over eight years at NIU in the College of Education and Office of Admissions. Prior to NIU, Michelle served as a residential trainer to adults with special needs.

Missy joined the AAC staff as a graduate assistant in 2005. She received her B.A. in both English and Psychology, from NIU. Missy is also pursuing a master's degree from the College of Education's Counseling program in School Counseling.


Rachel McEnery

Rachel started her assistantship with the AAC in Fall 2008.  She graduated from NIU with a degree in Psychology in May 2008 and has started a master's degree in Counseling.

Cara joined the AAC staff as a graduate assistant in 2008. She received her B.S. in Geography from NIU in May 2008 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in Adult and Higher Education in NIU's College of Education.
